Procrastination and time eaters as enemies of development

08/10/2020

Procrastination - in simple terms, the postponement of tasks. Quite a common phenomenon, especially when there are a lot of time eaters around, by which work or study go down the drain.

What is meant by time eaters? Any internal or external factors that distract us from important things. When we talk about time-eaters-thieves probably the fastest to come to mind are the telephone, the Internet, social media. A valid observation, however, one should be aware that the list is much longer.

In a previous post about time management, interruptions are described in only superlatives. The fact is that short, systematic breaks at work contribute to maintaining a high level of efficiency. However, what's too much is not healthy. Too frequent breaks will make it so that before we know it, our scheduled time for work has passed and the tasks for the day have not been completed. That's why it's so important to plan your workday and, above all, focus all your attention on the activities you are doing.

Multitasking can also have a negative impact on our performance at work. Trying to perform many tasks at once, we are often unable to complete any of them decently in a short period of time - this translates into a decrease in motivation and, in later stages, also a decrease in efficiency.

Poor work organization, lack of clear goals, clutter in the workplace - in a word, chaos. All these factors have a bad effect on concentration. Therefore, it is worth taking care of your inner peace and, when starting work, take those five or ten minutes to define your tasks for the day.

When it comes to time thieves, in addition to careful planning of tasks, it is also important to be assertive - to be able to say "no" not only to yourself when the urge to check social media strikes. Don't be afraid to say no when you have a flurry of your own responsibilities and new ones are coming from everywhere.

Why do we procrastinate?

Too many responsibilities

High ambition is good, as it allows you to grow and achieve a lot. However, when we have too much on our minds, we simply find it hard to focus, and we also don't know what to get down to first.

Boring tasks, lack of motivation

In everyone's work there will be tasks that are not among the most interesting or enjoyable. Their peculiarities make us put them off indefinitely, and they can also cause frustration and stress.

Procrastination is a common problem, noticing it in yourself is the first step to success. In the course of completing tasks, we will encounter many obstacles: lack of resources, conflicts at work, but also time thieves. It's worth being aware of each, watching out for each, and knowing ways to combat them.
